Youth Baseball & Softball Sign-Ups NOW OPEN
Lyons Youth Baseball program was introduced in the early 1940's to provide the youth an opportunity to develop skills in a structured program. Throughout the years, the program has expanded to youth ages 3 to 15 years old. In 1990's, Junior Kemp along side Noreen Pilkenton started the girls youth softball program. In the 2015, the Lyons Community Center took over operations of the program and today it houses 4 divisions: Grasshoopers, Minors, Majors & Pony. housing great talent from Lyons, Newark, Clyde, Sodus, North Rose Wolcott, Geneva, Phelps and Savannah.
Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers (originally called Tee-Ball started by Tim McFaul in the late 70's) is a program for players 3 to 5 years of age. This program focus is on teaching the very basic skills, team work, and is a great start for youth to participate in social activities. At this level, players will be able to hit off a tee and the more advance players will receive coach pitch.
MINOR BASEBALL & SOFTBALL
The Minor level (originally called grasshopper level) has been in place for over 40 years. This program is for players 6 to 8 years of age. Over the years, it has had many different looks all focusing on the development of basic play and game skills. In 2015, Cesar Ortiz with the help of Steve Savage and Tim Bonnell started the Girls Minor Softball program. This change in the minor program simply took place so that the girls could focus on developing softball skills and the boys continuing to focus on developing their skills.
Major Girls Softball
The Girls Major program is for youth ages 9 - 12 years of age. This program was started in 1995 by Junior Kemp, Noreen Pilkenton and the Village of Lyons. The program was greatly need as girls were very eager to to play. This program houses players from many different communities including Lyons, Clyde, Savannah, Newark, North Rose Wolcott and Sodus.
Major Boys Baseball
The Boys Major program is for youth ages 9 - 12 years of age. The program was started in the 1940's and is the longest running program in the community. The program houses players from many different communities including Lyons, Clyde, Savannah, North Rose Wolcott, Sodus, Newark and Phelps.
The Girls Manager of the Year Award is given in memory of Janet Bailey for her tireless commitment and support to girls athletics and our Lyons Youth Baseball & Softball program throughout her years of participation.
The Nicholas Sculli Manager of the Year Award was first presented back in 1982 in memory of Nick. Nick was the Manager of the Yankees for over 25 years and had the most championships of any manager in Lyons Little League History. Nick Sculli was also a professional baseball player with the Syracuse Chiefs and played local ball with the Sodus Lakers. He was known for his many outstanding performances on the baseball field and as manager for the Yankees.
Each of the young women that have been nominated have set an excellent example for their teammates and each of the younger players to follow. It is these traits that exemplifies the charectoristics of a sportswoman.
This Award is in Memory Kurt Simmons who past away as a result of an automobile accident in 2009. Kurt played on the Cardinals throughout his years in the Lyons Youth Baseball Program and his father Scott was a Coach as well as a member of the Board of Directors for many years. Each of the young men that have been nominated have set an excellent example for their teammates and each of the younger players to follow. It is these traits that truly exemplifies the charectaristics of Kurt.
Pony League is a Travel Baseball Program for ages 12 - 15. The program is played on the 60 / 90 field as takes place from early June to Mid July.
Fall Baseball is a travel league that Lyons enter beginning in 2016. The travel league features many different levels of play. In its first year of participation, Lyons had a 10U team and a 12U team. 10U participates at the traditional 45/60 field format and the 12U participates at the new Cal Ripken 50/70 field format.
The 10U All-Star Tournament has been in place for over 30 years. The tournament showcase talent from many players across the Finger Lakes area.. Past Tournament Champs Include: Lyons, Red Jacket, Sodus, Palmyra, Midlakes, HFL, Geneva, NRW, and Newark.
